Hey Siri, Alexa, Cortana! (2018 - )
‘From childhood I was fascinated with Seurat’s A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, and when I discovered it at the age of nine in our family encyclopedia I daringly cut out the page. The social parade and pretension resonated with my (limited) life experiences. So it was natural to absorb these Seurats into my own artworks. (La Grande Jatte was actually painted as a pair with The Bathers - contrasting life on the rich and poor sides of the river.)
The mannequins from Zara shop windows remind me of various versions of ‘ The Three Graces’ but also of the Siri, Alexa, and Cortana - the eager-to-please digital assistants.’
'Be Prepared' (2011 - 2017)
We are bombarded and harried with self-help promises and well-meaning mantras. Daily life decisions become epic adventures. These works rethink iconic images of women from historical paintings. Here they actively search for solutions; wanting to fix things and find a peaceful place.
'La vie en rose' (2014 - 2017)
Life is filled with mundane chores - cleaning can be seen as a labour of mythological proportions that only ends when we die! However we crave for more and want to make a difference. Inspired by Dutch 17th century genre painting (van Mieris, Metsu, Dou) these heroic women want to clean and repair the world.
‘Small’ heroine paintings
These works take on the intimate scale of Dutch genre painting. Women move from the home into the great outdoors - yet still deal with dated ‘job descriptions’.
Oil on wood panel or oil on canvas; 30 x 40 cm and 40 x 40 cm
Spikes can both protect and repel. Schopenhauer's describes two hedgehogs trying to stay warm on a bitter winter's day. When they get too close they ‘spike’ each other; too far apart they risk freezing to death. It’s like the dilemmas of human relations.
